Everything works just fine. Anyway - with 8 Alkaline batteries is very heavy. Next time I would buy one with a rechargeable battery ...

Unfortunately the AA battery holder must have a faulty connection, when using AA batteries as the grip's power source, the camera works fine for a while, but usually after 30 seconds or so, the top screen on the D800 will show a flashing 'battery empty' symbol. Then after a bit, the camera usually comes back to life and then off again and so on, so forth. And yes all the batteries were installed in the right direction and the appropriate battery option was chosen in the D800 menus. I tried both NIMHs and alkalines, same issue.I only have one D800 battery, so I removed it from the camera and put it in the grip. Success. It works absolutely fine. Would it work with one D800 battery in the camera as well as one in the grip, I presume so, I don't think there's any reason not to think so. The joystick could be a little stiffer than it is I think in my opinion, but I wouldn't say that's a big issue.I'm currently waiting for third party D800 batteries to come onto the market, taking an awful long time.Would I buy it again? Doubt it. I'd probably get one of the new ones that have come onto the market which includes a rather large rechargeable lithium battery (more capacity than a D4 battery!).On the good side, it's very affordable, works well, scroll wheels work in the right direction (the Nikon direction that is), the shutter button is fine and it has a little mount for the rubber protector that shields the battery grip power connector on the underside of the camera, to keep it safe and always available.
