Engagement sessions are great for your wedding photography clients that make their wedding unique, special and personal. These photos are really for the client to enjoy and send out to friends and family before the wedding. They should be a reflection of the clients personality and interest.

There are a lot of factors that go into planning an engagement session (lighting, location, timing, etc.), we have learned and developed some basic techniques that help us to maximize these shoots and produce authentic, creative, and beautiful images every single time. Here are a few things to keep in mind when creating a wedding engagement session for your client.

Communicate with your client.

Throw out some suggestions you think and see what they think. Many times they will surprise you with ideas of their own. While everyone doesn’t have to become best friends with their clients, just remember that the more comfortable your couples are with you as a person, the more they will open up in front of the camera.

Have them bring their favorite prop

One of the tips that we tell our couples is to bring something that is either fun or significant to their relationship – a bike, hat, hair piece, skateboard, surfboard, their dogs, ice cream cones, or balloons! Signs that say things like: “All because two people fell in love”, “Happily Ever After” This brings an element of spontaneity, and originality to the shoot which makes the session more fun for us and memorable for the couple!

Let their personality show through.

Let them just have fun together and capture those moments. Don’t be too strict in your positioning as that will come out in your photos. You want to let them be as natural as possible. Lots of kissing, lots of touchy feely. You’ll find it makes them relaxed and your photos will have a truly emotional connection show through.

What to wear

*Solid colors with little or no pattern
*Belts or something that helps create an hour glass figure for women
*Shoes in good condition that are neutral & fit with your outfit
*Cool textures in clothing that won’t cause distraction but actually can create a great contrast & interesting look.
